Description

Immerse yourself in the quiet Zen practice of ink brush painting. Sumi-e is an ancient Japanese art used by Buddhist monks as a meditation. It is the tradition of capturing the spirit of simple subjects using a minimal number of brushstrokes. You will be guided step by step in using a bamboo brush, black sumi ink, and rice paper. You do not need to already be an "artist" to do Sumi-e. Just let Sumi-e to allow you discover the artist that's already been INSIDE of you!

Specific brushstroke demos are given that are practiced to express the spirit of the sandhill crane in this quiet and meditative class.

Special Instructions

All supplies will be provided for level one (first time) students. All ages are welcome.

Level two students will be expected to bring their own supplies.Supply sheet [below] is the same for all students - whether provided by thestudio or self purchased at local art store. [Sarnoff features Sumi-e supplies.]

SUMI-E SUPPLIES Newsprint tablet 12” x 18” (optional)

Rice Paper tablet 12” x 18” (Sumi Sketch Pad)

Pointed Bamboo brush (Princeton size L) or similar "hard" brush

Black Sumi Ink (Small green Yasutomo bottle is best)3 small covered containers (4 oz. food savers are fine)

Tin can for water

Paint rag or paper towels

Black felt for under your work available in class from teacher for $3.00
